In 1948 wildcatters struck oil in a remote region of California's Central Coast. They believed it would be the 'American Saudi Arabia'. What proceeded was the construction of vibrant mid-century company town with a high-standard of living. By 1978 the industry accessible oil was gone, the company left, and the community began to change.
The Blue Sky Center is a repurposed and evolving rural development center that features impressive mid-century industrial architecture dating back to 1950. The Center is designed to be a rural community center focused on investing and redeveloping the community around the principles of financial, social, and environmental equity.
What We Do
Blue Sky Center is designed to host and support a variety of credible and professional creative ventures, unique programming, and event experiences that align with our mission, vision and aims.
What We Don't Do
Fund or support risky start-up projects, unproven social business models, or any event, venture, or organization that does not align with the rural, pioneering spirit of our wonderful community.
Our Top Circle & Community Circle reviews and vets any proposed partnership or collaboration through the lens of dynamic governance and set criteria.
By The Numbers
We are recipients of a sizable impact investment that includes land, infrastructure, and equipment. We're working with our partners to develop these assets to regenerate the land, economy, and community.
Twenty-two-thousand square feet of existing buildings
- Four thousand foot private runway
- Two-hundred-fifty acres of alluvial farmland
- Thirty-eight acres of land available for new, low impact, rural housing innovation
Stage of Development
We are a 501c3 non-profit working as a rural development organization. Right now we've completed improvements to four main assets.
We have a foothold on the property and collaboration with community but there are plenty of additional opportunities for equitable impact investment from both the private and public sector.
